Liz Yelling's tips for those who want to get started in running

- Don't be daunted by the prospect of becoming a runner. It's not all tight lycra, sweaty bodies and skinny, fast, young women. Infact, it's quite the opposite. Get out and get started and you'll soon find that you are an inspiration to other runners just like you.

- The hardest thing about running is taking the first few steps. Being a successful runner doesn't mean running fast. It means being able to walk/run/walk or run at your own pace, with confidence, balance, rhythm, posture and style.

- The most daunting thing about trying something new is the feeling that you are in unfamiliar territory or out of your comfort zone. Everyone feels nervous when they start something new. That's completely natural. But the more you do the more relaxed you'll feel and the more confident you'll become.

- The great thing about starting running, is that it's more about your journey to becoming a healthy, active and energised person than it is about how fast or how far you run.

- Get the right gear. Choose clothing to exercise in that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Getting the correct footwear is a must for runners, even when you're first starting out.

- Take it slowly. Don't rush. What's the hurry? Building up activity time gradually and progressively will see you grow in confidence, ability and fitness.

- Be brave, take a deep breath and have a go. What have you got to lose? You will more than likely surprise yourself by how much you can do!
