ashmei Running Jacket

31 October, 2011 0 comments

Have you heard of ashmei? No?  Neither had I.  But remember it now, as I have no doubt many a runner will be speaking about it in the future.  As the winter weather settles in we have taken the opportunity to put ashmei’s latest gear to the test.

There is nothing I like more than running in the winter.  For me it makes the run that much more challenging and rewarding.   I took the ashmei gear with me on a recent trip to Portland Oregon and decided to put it through its tests on a drizzly day on a trail run along Horsetail Falls, just outside Portland.  The Route took me on a steady climb towards a wonderful waterfall via Ponytail Falls and  Oneontra Trail.

But back to ashmei.  First the price, lets get that bit out of the way.  The jacket is priced at £180, not cheap, but don’t stop reading!.  The running tights are priced at £100 and the Beanie £25.   Now don’t be put off the price, as what I am about to tell you is as much as a surprise to me as you.  It’s worth every penny!

So here is why.  The jacket is an elegant fit and looks great too.  There are a few rather clever features that I value.  The zip if offset at the top, which means that when its fully done up to the top its not smacking you in the face when you run.  Ashmei Running gearThe Jacket also has a combination of waterproof pockets to house your favorite MP3 player.  In addition there are a number of key cable holders and grips to guide the earphone cables along the jacket to your ears.  These grips are awesome and stop that constant bouncing of the cable that can be so incredibly annoying on long distance runs.

The Jacket also has a number of smaller zips which when undone provide some much needed tactical ventilation. There is also a rather clever griping rubber around the bottom edge of the jacket that prevents from it riding up and some neat concealed mittens for when the temperature drops on a long run and you forgot your gloves.

The Jacket is made from a combination of Merino and softshell Polyester , each tactically placed to provide warmth, waterproofness and breathability .  ashmei call this strategic placement of fabric 360º Mapping and it really works.

The running tights are also incredible.  They are very, very comfortable.  The pair I wore was a little baggy for me, so do take care to order the right size!.  Ashmei running gear reviewBut they were great to wear.  The trousers were stretchy in the right places where others sections (mainly around the lower legs) provided more of compression fit.

The running tights also used 360º Mapping using merino wool on the thigh area and a water resistant lycra on the calf area for wet winter running.

The ashmei Beanie priced at a very reasonable £25 I did not test, but if you want to complete the set I can only guess that it will be as brilliant as the rest of the gear.
