Nottingham Ultra Race Report
04 October, 2010
Fifty-seven runners gathered at Blidworth Community Leisure Centre for the inaugural 'Nottingham Ultra', a 50km Ultra-Marathon organised by East Midlands based ULTRArace Ltd. On a gloriously sunny day, the runners followed the Robin Hood Way long distance footpath from Blidworth right into the heart of Nottingham using tracks and trails to navigate their way to the finish.
From the offset race favourite Terry Conway, accompanied by local runner Stephen Shanks, raced ahead - they blistered through all the checkpoints together, running the 50km course in 3 hours, 54 minutes and 40 seconds. This was a remarkable run considering the terrain - to put the quality of their run into context, they passed the standard 26.2 mile marathon distance in just over three hours. Mark Shepherd came third in a great time of 4 hours, 28 minutes and 30 seconds, especially taking into account his deviances off piste.
The ladies also had a great day out with Lisa Barry finishing first in 4 hours, 42 minutes and 47 seconds beating Annie Baumber home by eight minutes and 18 seconds, with Lisa gaining a slight advantage from Annie losing her way on the route. Anna Finn, an ULTRArace regular, finished third in 5 hours, 17 minutes and 51 seconds - a great time for her 43rd marathon this year.
ULTRArace's Rory Coleman said, 'We are delighted with the first running of The Nottingham Ultra. The Castle provided a wonderful backdrop to the race finale and lots of spectators were there to cheer the runners home. Next year the race will be part of the 9bar UK ULTRArace Championship and we are looking forward to seeing even more people take up the challenge.
