Brighton2010 The 2010 Brighton marathon was a great success

Date: April 2010

The inaugural Brighton Marathon took place today ( 18th April 2010) on what was one of the hottest days of the year in the United Kingdom so far. The weather may have been perfect from a spectators point of view as they turned out in their thousands to line the route and and cheer on the runners.

The runners faced a run in the 19 degree heat, which I am sure for many made it a little more difficult than it would otherwise have been. As someone that has run the London Marathon and New York, I can tell you that the atmosphere of this Marathon was fantastic. The course was relatively flat, but took in some of the city and gave runners some great views of Brighton Sea front. 7500 runners were on the start line, in addition, owing to the volcano ash which has grounded flights, organisers were able to accommodate a number of runners that were due to be attending the Boston marathon and Vienna Marathon.

Tim Hutchings, Race Director and his team have done a great job in firstly proposing Brighton as a great location for the run and secondly, working hard to deliver what was undoubtedly a great event. The team of volunteers that helped out around the course were fantastic. Without exception they were friendly, knowledgeable and hugely enthusiastic - which in many ways made the race such a great success.

The Brighton marathon got off to a great start - Steve Ovett started the race and was there at the finish line to welcome in the runners. The race was won in 2hrs 19 min and 5 Sec by Mongolian Ser-od Ba-otochir . The winning woman was Joanna Bryce from Burgess Hill, she hit the finish line in 3:03:16.

Those members that came up to see us and say hi - great work! - congratulations on your achievement and dont forget to log your distance on the running log!
