Forefoot Striking - Newton Running
04 October, 2010
A lot has been written about the Newton Running shoe, much more has been written about Forefoot running! With such a wealth of information out there it is difficult to make up ones mind! The only way to be sure is to embrace the theory and give it a good go!
JoggingBuddy went out an bought a pair of Newton Running Shoes with the explicit aim of embracing this new theory and trying it out. The concept of Forefoot running is sound, there is lots of fancy information that makes it a credible scientific breakthrough.
Have a quick look at this intro:
If that wasnt enough then have a look at this one too. You can see that the science makes real sense.
So what did we make of it?
Our initial impression was awesome! - it took a bit of getting use to, but it felt quite good. It did require a lot more concentration, particularly with the running posture. There were a couple of things that were obvious to us, firstly, i could not run my usual full distance straight away - this was perhaps expected as your body was now using slightly different muscles and coping with a new technique. The second, related to the first, is that i now had mild pain in muscles which were previously unaffected by my running. This was mainly around the ankle.
A personal view on the shoe - they look great, they fit well and they made me run better! - but i had to ask myself, can i run the forefoot way with another shoe? I have now adopted the forefoot running style but no longer use the Newton shoe why? I cant maintain the good running form ( posture) that is required for a long period - so i need a shoe that will allow me more margin for error and give me more cushioning when i need to relax from that running posture.
Newton do have "transition" shoes - with more cushioning that allows you to slowly build up to the full Newton Forefoot running style - these guys have thought of everything.
So now over to you?.. what are your views? do you like the Newton Running shoe? do you own a pair? share with us your views.
